Bone is a living tissue and plays a structural role in the body. Bone formation and bone replacement takes place throughout our lives however this is influenced by many factors including diet. Calcium gained from our diet is an extremely important factor in supporting healthy bones.

Great sources of calcium are milk, cheese and other dairy products, broccoli, cabbage, sardines and pilchards.

Adults need 800mg a day and you should be able to get all the calcium they need from their diet however there can be times when it is especially important to get the correct daily intake of calcium - during or after the menopause, athletes, slimmers and the elderly.

Helpful tips to help care for your bones...

  • Eat calcium rich food - such as milk and cheese
  • Reduce your intake of salt - recommended daily intake 6g
  • Reduce your consumption of fizzy drinks
  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Increase intake of vitamin D or 20 minutes exposure to sunlight daily
  • Increase intake of water
  • Low impact exercise - where you support your own body weight such as running or aerobics
  • Quit smoking
  • Maintain a balanced healthy diet
